Former senator Fred R. Harris, a liberal prairie populist from Oklahoma whose meteoric rise in politics ended in the 1970s with two sputtering presidential campaigns in which he vowed to “take the rich off welfare” and keep “the big hogs out of the trough,” died Nov. 23 at 94.
Mr. Harris’ wife, Margaret Elliston, confirmed his death to the Associated Press but did not provide further details.
