SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – On the heels of our first major winter storm of the season, all eyes are on yet another potential storm for Thanksgiving.
Unsettled at times leading up to the holiday
An area of low pressure and frontal system will move through Central New York late Monday night into Tuesday.
This will initially bring widespread rain to the area, followed by some lake effect rain and snow showers Tuesday night into Wednesday.
While it is still too early to pin down exact amounts, with a west wind driving this lake response, accumulating snow will be most likely for places east of Lake Ontario like the Tug Hill Plateau.
What about Thanksgiving Day?
Additional lake showers east of Lake Ontario Wednesday night will give way to another storm system moving at us from the southwest for Thursday.
There are still some details to iron out in terms of the exact track of this storm—especially how far north it moves—but models are starting to come into agreement about the potential for widespread precipitation which could include rain, areas of a wintry mix, and accumulating snow.
This could have significant impacts on Thanksgiving travel across Central New York and the northeast.
Lake effect snow likely to follow into next weekend
Regardless of the exact track of the Thanksgiving storm, cold air will be funneling in behind it with highs only reaching the 30s by Friday and into next weekend. This cold air moving over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Ontario looks to result in a prolonged period of lake effect snow for parts of the area.
