A suspect is in custody after Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., says she was "physically accosted" on U.S. Capitol grounds Tuesday night.
The United States Capitol Police have arrested 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois. He is facing a charge of Assaulting a Government Official.
Just before 6 p.m., the Member of Congress' office reported an incident in the Rayburn House Office Building. Police said House Division Officers and Threat Assessment Section agents tracked down the suspect. McIntyre was interviewed and then subsequently arrested.
The building was open to the public at the time of the incident and Capitol Police said McIntyre went through a security screening before entering the building.
Rep. Mace confirmed the incident on her personal , writing "I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds by a pro-tr*ns man."
One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it'll heal just fine. Your tr*ns violence and threats on my life will only make me double down. FAFO," Mace wrote.
On Mace's she claimed she was accosted over her "fight to protect women."
The Congresswoman about transgender bathroom policies after Deleware State Sen. Sarah McBride became the first openly transgender woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Mace introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using the women's restrooms at the U.S. Capitol.
Capitol police have not released a motive for McIntyre's alleged attack on Mace Tuesday evening.
