A 12-year-old boy is dead after falling through ice at Washington Park Saturday afternoon, and an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition.
Police and rescue personnel searched the lake in Washington Park following a report of individuals who had fallen through the ice. The initial call came in at about 4:35 p.m.
According to police, the fire department rescued the girl from the lake and transported her to Albany Medical Center, where she is in critical condition.
As of Sunday morning, the girl is still listed in critical condition.
After the girl was located, crews continued to search the lake. Police say New York State Police underwater recovery team divers located the boy's body at about 7:25 p.m.
Investigators believe the 12-year-old boy attempted to walk north across the lake towards the lake house and fell through the ice. The 11-year-old girl saw the boy fall through the ice and attempted to help while following the same walking path across the lake and then falling through the ice.
Albany Police say notifications have been made to both of the juvenile's families, the names of the victims will not be released due to their age.
Both are students of the Albany City School District, in North Albany Middle School. In a , Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in part, “Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time ... This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community.” Crisis services will be available at the middle school Monday, as well as at the elementary schools the two students attended before moving to the middle school.
Albany Police Department, Albany Fire Department, general services from Albany, traffic engineering, state police, and the Albany County Sheriff’s Office were all at the scene.
