HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — The U.S. Flag is flying at half staff over Pennsylvania Saturday, and you may be wondering why.
Saturday, Dec. 7, is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, recognizing those who lost their lives in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on this day in 1941.
In a proclamation, President Joe Biden urged “all Federal agencies, interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff…in honor of those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.”
“I encourage all Americans to reflect on the courage shown by our brave service members that day and remember their sacrifices,” Biden said. “I ask us all to give sincere thanks and appreciation to the survivors of that unthinkable day.”
According to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, 2,343 service members were killed, 960 missing and 1,272 wounded in the attack.
On August 23, 1994, the United States Congress designated December 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
