Investigators have identified the gunman who at a small private school in Oroville, California on Wednesday.
Additionally, the Butte County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) said the two victims of the shooting at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventist, identified as two boys, aged five and six, are in critical but stable condition as they continue to receive treatment in an area hospital.
The 6-year-old victim was identified as Roman Mendez. Sheriff Kory Honea said that Roman suffered two gunshot wounds, leaving him with internal injuries.
The 5-year-old was also identified as Elias Wolford. Honea said that Elias was shot one time in the abdomen, suffering internal injuries.
Honea said that both victims have a long road of recovery ahead of them.
The fact that they are still with us I feel like is a miracle, something we should be thankful for," said Sheriff Honea. "...I think it is very important that we always keep in the forefront of our mind that the people that truly matter, through the course of this investigation, are the victims. I certainly don't want them to be lost in the overall story."
The BCSO said they have confirmed the identity of the shooting suspect, who was found dead on the campus of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and said they are working to establish a motive. During the 3 p.m. news conference on Thursday, BCSO identified the shooter as 56-year-old Glenn Litton.
Police explained that Litton has a lengthy criminal history and mental health issues. Honea said that Litton is best described as being homeless, spending most of his time between the Chico area and Sacramento.
The BCSO received multiple 911 calls at around 1 p.m.Wednesday regarding a man who was firing a gun at students. Honea said that the shooter was at the school to meet with the principal earlier on Wednesday to inquire about "enrolling a student". The sheriff said that moments later, screams and gunshots were heard.
While the Butte County Sheriff's Office continues to lead the investigation, the FBI has also joined the investigation.
