President-elect Donald Trump contended Friday that Pete Hegseth, his embattled pick for defense secretary, is “doing very well” despite indications that he risks falling short of the majority of votes needed for confirmation in a Republican-led Senate next month. Hegseth, who spent the week making his case privately to lawmakers on Capitol Hill, faces allegations of heavy drinking, sexual misconduct and financial mismanagement of veterans’ nonprofits — all of which he denies. In a social media post, Trump said Hegseth’s support in the Senate is “strong and deep” and called his pick a “winner.”
