Lake effect snow continued to pummel Great Lakes communities on Sunday, with some reporting as much as 46 inches, as snowplows got stuck and some post-Thanksgiving holiday travelers were forced to abandon their vehicles.
The heavy snowfall, caused by extremely cold air passing over the unusually warm water of the Great Lakes, prompted emergency declarations in parts of New York and Pennsylvania, as state officials deployed legions of snowplows to clear roads and highways — particularly in northwestern and southwestern New York, where snowfall has been the heaviest. The National Weather Service has called the situation “paralyzing,” with four feet of snow already on the ground in some places and the extreme weather expected to continue through Monday. For some, another foot or more is on the way.
