Coldest air of year sets in

The coldest temperatures of the fall have officially arrived for the Eastern Shore as the east coast is experiencing an Arctic Outbreak. Lows for the next several days are forecast to be below freezing and even down in the 20s. There is even a slight chance of snow showers overnight Sunday night.

With the cold snap it is important to take steps to protect outdoor plants that are sensitive to freezing, bring potted plants indoors or move them to a sheltered area and ensure gutters are clear of leaves and debris so water doesn’t freeze and cause ice dams.

You should also check around windows, doors, and vents for drafts and use weather stripping or caulking to seal them up. Check your heating system and replace air filters and clean vents to maintain efficiency. Use space heaters safely. If you need additional heat in a specific room, use space heaters, but be cautious about fire safety. Keep them away from flammable materials.

Make sure your car’s antifreeze levels are adequate, and consider using winter tires for better traction. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with items like blankets, gloves, and extra food.

Much of the next 7 days will be dry. There is a slight chance of rain showers Wednesday night.

Temperatures are forecast to warm up some in the middle of the week, before falling again on the weekend.

The National Weather Service reported this week all wind chill advisory and watch/warning products will be changed to Cold Weather Advisory and Extreme Cold Watch/Warning this winter.
