ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The season’s first snow caused a flurry of traffic crashes across the St. Louis area.

Police, firefighters and medical services responded to multiple crashes after snow started falling Saturday morning. The crashes seemed to see a lull in the afternoon, but as the sun began to set multiple crashes were again being reported.

Bridges and overpasses are traditionally some of the biggest problem areas during snow and ice events and that was true on Saturday as well.

Traffic was slowed multiple times throughout the day at the Blanchette Bridge, which carries Interstate 70 over the Missouri River. A similar situation was seen at the Daniel Boone Bridge, the Interstate 64 bridge over the same river.

The section of Interstate 64 where the bridge is located, where the highway runs generally east and west from I-70 in St. Charles County to Interstate 270 in West St. Louis County, saw several crashes throughout the day.

At the time of this posting, around 5 p.m. Saturday, another crash was reported near the Daniel Boone Bridge and traffic was at a standstill.

Several crashes were also reported on I-70 in St Charles County and I-270 in North St. Louis County. Emergency responders were also at the scene of one crash most of the afternoon on Interstate 55 near Butler Hill Road in South St. Louis County.

A parked Missouri State Highway Patrol cruiser was also struck by a vehicle as a trooper was working at the scene of an earlier crash Saturday afternoon in South St. Louis County. The trooper was not injured.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police also responded to multiple crashes throughout the city. On a section of I-64/U.S. Highway 40 approaching downtown from the west, where the highway is elevated from the ground, several crashes were reported throughout the day,

Public Safety agencies throughout the day advised motorists not to travel or to use caution. While the snow is expected to end on Saturday evening, temperatures are expected to drop leading to potential refreeze.

It could be several days before crash statistics and reports related to the snow event are released. First Alert 4 will continue to provide updates as additional information is made available.
