The National Weather Service has issued a wide range of winter weather alerts across central New York as rain and snow is already complicating Thanksgiving travel.
Areas under a Winter Storm Warning will see heavier snow accumulation over the next 12 hours. Higher elevations of Cortland, Chenango, Madison, and Oneida Counties will likely receive between 6-9" of heavy wet snow.
Meanwhile the lower elevations of Onondaga County might only get an inch or two of snow before mixing with rain and melting. Regardless of exact snowfall totals expect wet, slushy and potentially snow-covered roads today.
After this system exits the region today, lake effect snow will develop downwind of the Great Lakes through the holiday weekend. Steady, heavy snow will make travel difficult to impossible as feet of snow are possible through Sunday night and into Monday.
If your travel plans include driving through these areas make sure to check for any closures before leaving the house. Even if there aren't closures, exercise extreme caution when on the roads.
