Michigan Teamsters endorses Harris-Walz after union president announces neutrality

Both Democrats and Republicans have been waiting to see which candidate for president the Teamsters Union would endorse.

Wednesday, the union's president announced they will not be endorsing any candidate, for the first time in nearly three decades, instead choosing to remain neutral.

It's after the organization said they received neither majority support for Vice President Harris or former President Trump.

But in a turn of events, the Michigan Teamsters Union says it is endorsing the Harris-Walz Campaign.

It represents about 245,000 active and retired members.

President Kevin Moore in a statement said Harris and Walz have "consistently demonstrated their dedication to championing the labor movement."

News Channel 3 spoke with Moore Wednesday, asking him why Michigan Teamsters chose the hard stance, and if it will eventually impact the nationwide support from the labor group.

""The decision for Sean O'Brien and the Executive Board at the International that would be his decision to make," Moore said. "At this time, he says he's staying neutral. The Joint Council and Teamsters of Michigan know it's too important for us to do a neutral endorsement. We're going to do a full force endorsement for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz."

News Channel 3 also asked if there was anything specifically that caused the Michigan Teamsters to make the announcement.

The union always waits for the decision by the general president before making one of their own.

"When he took a neutral endorsement, we talked to our board, and unanimously have to make a decision, and our decision has been made to support the Harris-Walz campaign. And our members are telling us that," Moore said.
