An atmospheric river that has brought rain, snow and winds to California’s far north earlier this week has steadily increased its impact on the greater Bay Area on Friday. The National Weather service issued flash flood warnings for San Francisco and large swaths of the East Bay including Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond and Alameda.
In the afternoon, a rain band lingered over the Santa Cruz Mountains, San Francisco and Oakland for 90 minutes. Flooding was reported in parts of the Mission and Marina districts and shut down lanes on northbound Highway 101 at Interstate 280.
Across the Bay, parts of westbound Interstate 80 west of the Bay Bridge toll plaza flooded. UC Berkeley warned students in an alert to avoid Centennial Drive and Stadium Rim Way because of “severe flooding in the roadway.”
A stretch of Highway 121 was blocked in both northbound and southbound directions between Highway 116 and Eighth Street East in Sonoma County, the California Highway Patrol reports.
Heavy rain and the danger of urban flooding in the Bay Area will lighten as the evening progresses. Afterward, the effects of the atmospheric river are expected to begin shifting southward and out of the Bay Area, though intermittent showers may occur over the weekend.
