Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” met with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend and agreed to “restart communications," the duo shared Monday.
The hosts began their explanation Monday by revisiting their on-air comments about Trump’s cabinet selections, noting how they called last week for a chance to speak with the president-elect. That led to a meeting with Trump over the weekend, the hosts said, which was their first meeting with him in seven years.
“It’s going to come as no surprise to anybody who watches this show, has watched it over the past year or over the past decade that we didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues, and we told him so,” Scarborough said.
“What we did agree on was to restart communications,” Brzezinski followed.
The hosts also addressed possible criticism of their decision to speak to Trump, saying there is no reason not to share their ideas with the president-elect.
“For those asking why we would go speak to the president-elect during such fraught times, especially between us, I guess I would ask back ‘why wouldn’t we?’” Brzezinski added. “Joe and I realized its time to do something different and that starts with, not only talking about Donald Trump, but also talking with him.”
Scarborough continued, saying that it makes sense for leaders of both political parties to “seek common ground” given that Trump is ineligible to seek reelection after serving his second term in office. Many Democratic leaders who have spoke to the hosts, Scarborough claimed, are echoing these claims in calling for a “new approach.”
“When I say top Democrats, I mean top Democrats,” Scarborough said. “They said ‘listen, we are open to working with the incoming president if the incoming president is open to working with us.’”
Democrats continue to reevaluate their messaging in the wake of their decisive defeat on Election Day. Michael LaRosa, the former press secretary for First Lady Jill Biden, lashed out at Democrats last week, calling to revisit the party’s approach to diversity, equity and inclusion along with other policies and practices.
“We need to get serious people opining about policy and politics, not one-upping each other or competing for who can make the most provocative insult about a Trump nominee you oppose,” LaRosa said.
