CHAPIN, S.C. (WIS) - Authorities announced Sunday that Tennessee murder suspect Nicholas Wayne Hamlett has been taken into custody, after being located and identified at a Columbia hospital. Hamlett is in the temporary custody of the U.S. Marshall Service Columbia Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Police say Hamlett was located after a hospital employee recognized the suspect and notified police. A responding officer also recognized Hamlett.

Hamlett’s identity was then confirmed using a fingerprint scanner. Columbia Police said arrangements are being made with Tennessee authorities regarding Hamlett’s extradition to Monroe County.

WIS was first informed about the ongoing search after police alerted citizens Hamlett who was seen in the Chapin area.

The search for Hamlett continued in the Midlands from Halloween night into Sunday, November 10.
