TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WSFA) - One person is dead and 16 others are injured after a shooting on the campus of Tuskegee University, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Authorities say agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation were notified of the shooting around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.
Officials say an 18-year-old was confirmed dead at the scene. A total of 16 other people were injured in the incident. 12 were injured by gunfire and taken to hospitals in Montgomery and Lee counties. Four other people sustained injuries that were not related to gunfire.
University officials confirmed that the victim who died was a “non-university individual.” That victim’s family has been notified, the university said.
Tuskegee University announced that all classes on Monday, Nov. 11, will be cancelled as law enforcement continues to process the scene. University grief counselors will be available for students in the chapel on Monday.
ALEA is asking for the public’s help in the case. Anyone with information is asked to submit tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI and upload any digital files regarding the incident online at fbi.gov/tuskegeeshooting24.
The private university, located in Macon County, about 40 miles from Alabama’s capital city, celebrated its homecoming on Saturday. It’s not yet clear if the early morning shooting was connected to those celebrations.
ALEA officials say another update will be provided at 5 p.m. Sunday. No further details have been released as the investigation is ongoing.
