Former Kamala Harris Aide Urges Joe Biden to Resign Within Next 30 Days

Jamal Simmons, former Vice President Kamala Harris' communications director, called for President Joe Biden to resign and make her the president within the next month, during an appearance on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday morning.

Simmons has worked for several Democratic politicians, including then-Governor Bill Clinton's presidential campaign and Al Gore's, among others, and served as deputy director of communications for the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Most recently, he was Harris' communications director from January 2022 to January 2023.

On State of the Union, Simmons praised Biden, calling him a "phenomenal president." However, he noted "there's one promise left that he could fulfill, being a transitional figure. He could resign the presidency in the next 30 days, make Kamala Harris president of the United States."

Newsweek has reached out to the White House press team for comment via email on Sunday.

He said the move would "absolve her from having to oversee the January 6 transition of her own defeat." The vice president of the United States is tasked with overseeing the certification of the presidential election on January 6. In 2021, then-Vice President Mike Pence made national headlines when he broke from Trump and certified the 2020 election results. Trump refused to accept the results and claimed widespread voter fraud, despite no evidence.

Harris, who became the Democratic nominee after Biden withdrew from the race in late July just over 100 days before the election, was defeated by Trump in the presidential election earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Trump had secured both the popular vote and more than the necessary 270 Electoral College votes, clinching the presidency. By Saturday night, all the state races were called and Trump won 312 Electoral College votes compared to Harris' 226.

The new administration will take office on January 20, 2025.

Simmons added that the move "would dominate the news at a point where Democrats have to learn drama and transparency and doing things that the public wants to see, this is the moment for us to change the entire perspective of how Democrats operate," the communications aide said.

After the show, in a post on X, formerly Twitter, Simmons added to his comments, saying that Democrats "must realize the old rules no longer apply," adding that "Americans respond to drama and excitement."

He believes that Biden's resignation would "turn tables on Trump, keep Kamala from presiding over Jan 6 and make it easier for next woman to run."

Following the election, which most polls had shown was an extraordinarily tight race, some social media users have posted the same call for Biden to resign.

Allison Gill, a Trump critic who worked at the U.S. Department of Veterans, posted on X: "Biden should resign so Harris becomes 47 and Donald has to throw out all his 47 swag." She made the post through her podcast Mueller, She Wrote's X account.

Another account, Call to Activism, which was founded by attorney Joe Gallina, echoed similar thoughts, "President Biden should resign as an act of protest tomorrow so Kamala Harris could be sworn in as the first female president until January. That would make Trump 48 and ruin that stupid hat of his."

After winning the election, Trump is set to be the 47th president, having already served one term as the 45th. Trump and Grover Cleveland are the only U.S. presidents to serve two terms nonconsecutively.
