A dangerous wildfire was spreading rapidly in populated areas of Ventura County in Southern California on Wednesday. The Mountain Fire, which ignited just before 9 a.m. about 20 miles northwest of Malibu, had exploded to more than 14,000 acres by the evening.
Officials conducted hasty evacuations in parts of the county, including Camarillo Heights, and reported that several people had been injured and taken to hospitals. By midafternoon, evacuation orders had expanded southwest into Camarillo along the 101 freeway. Major utilities had also cut power to prevent their equipment from igniting new fires. Some schools said they would close Thursday.
