WEBBERVILLE, Mich. (WILX) - Three Lansing residents were among those killed in a tragic crash on I-96 in Ingham County late Saturday night. The fiery crash killed four people and injured 17 others. Michigan State Police said in a press release Sunday that a 47-year-old man, 43-year-old woman and 20-year-old woman from Lansing were killed. The three Lansing residents were traveling in the same vehicle and police confirmed they were related to one another.

The other person killed in the crash was a 29-year-old man from Carson City.

According to Michigan State Police, the crash was caused by a semi-truck that plowed into stopped traffic ahead of him.

“It appears that he didn’t see the slow down, wasn’t paying attention. We’re not sure what was going on in the cab, but he ended up plowing into the vehicles,” said Lt. Rene Gonzalez with Michigan State Police.

Witnesses explained their view of the crash to News 10 Sunday.

“You would really think it was a tanker or just a bomb went off. It was loud enough to where it stopped our customers in the parking lot,” said Justin McCallum, a clerk at the Mobil Gas Station along M-52 near I-96.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) inspected the bridge’s structural integrity and deemed it safe to reopen Sunday evening.

Michigan State Police plan to speak with victims and gather any video from the crash to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the semi-truck driver. The driver of the semi-truck was taken to the University of Michigan Health Hospital in Ann Arbor for treatment of his injuries.
