TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily/AP) — Former President Donald Trump has made several recent stops in Arizona for his 2024 presidential campaign. He returned to the Valley on Thursday, speaking at Mullett Arena on the campus of Arizona State University.
Trump kicked off the rally by railing at Harris for the administration’s record on the border, which he says has “unleashed” an “army of migrant gangs” who are “waging a campaign of violence and terror against our citizens.”
“We’re like a garbage can for the world,” Trump said, adding a new insult to a litany he’s used to describe the state of the nation under the Biden administration.
He accused Harris of perpetrating “a wicked betrayal of America” and having “orchestrated the most egregious betrayal that any leader in American history has ever inflicted upon our people,” even though crime is down.
The former president says the record “disqualifies her from even thinking about being president.”
The crowd in Arizona applauded to Trump’s pledge to launch the largest deportation operation in history.
One woman waiting to enter the venue Thursday morning said she traveled from Casa Grande for her first time at a Trump rally. “He is just the most dynamic, and I just think that’s awesome,” she said.
Chuck Coughlin, president of HighGround Inc., said he expects more candidate visits before the Nov. 5 general election, especially given the close races in Arizona. He also expects a younger voter turnout.
“Younger is hugely supportive of Harris, and Trump struggles with that, that constituency, but if they show up in higher proportion, that’s a game changer, that’ll change the outcome of the election,” Coughlin said.
Thursday won’t be Trump’s final visit to the Valley before Election Day. He’s scheduled to appear at an event in Glendale on Halloween with well-known conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson.
Ahead of Trump’s rally in the East Valley, the Harris campaign released a statement calling him a “risk” to the country.
“Those who know Donald Trump best are sounding the alarm about the risk he poses to the safety, security, and future of our country and democracy — which is why a historic number of Arizona Republicans and independents are putting country over party and backing Vice President Harris. Trump wants unchecked power, and it’s up to Arizona voters to decide whether they’re going to let him take it,” said James Martin, the campaign’s rapid response director for Arizona.
