Western North Carolina updates death toll as Hurricane Helene recovery continues

As Western North Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, which hit on Sept. 26, counties throughout the state are updating their death totals amid recovery efforts.

TheN.C. Joint Information Center shared the latest information as of 9 a.m. on Sept. 30 with News 13. The totals and information per county are listed below:

Buncombe County

40 confirmed storm-related deaths. Officials did not specify who they were or in what area they were found.

Catawba County

A 4-year-old girl passed on Sept. 26 when the vehicle that she was riding in was involved in a 2-vehicle crash on a closed, flooded road.

Cleveland County

A female, unconfirmed age, passed on Sept. 27 after being struck by a falling tree while out on a walk.

A 72-year-old man passed on Sept. 27 also after being struck by a falling tree.

Haywood County

Four confirmedstorm-related deaths. Officials did not specify who they were or in what area they were found.

Henderson County

Five confirmed storm-related deaths.Officials did not specify who they were or in what area they were found

Macon County

One confirmed storm-related death. Macon County Sheriff's Office deputy Jim Lau reportedly passed after his truck went underwater.

Madison County

A 37-year-old woman passed on Sept. 27 while evacuating her home due to rising flood waters, and her car was swept away by floodwaters a short distance from her home.

Rutherford County

A 40-year-old man passed on Sept. 27 after a tree fell on his home.

Transylvania County

No storm-related deaths have been reported, and no reports of missing persons are pending.

Yadkin County

A 57-year-old male passed on Sept. 27 when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a large tree that fell across the roadway from the opposite side of the highway.

News 13is working to get more information on those fatalities and others unaccounted for at this time.
