It’s “definitely too early” to determine what, if any, impacts may occur to the Tampa Bay region, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say they have their eye on a tropical disturbance that could enter the southern Gulf of Mexico later this week.
National Weather Service meteorologist Keily Delerme called it “an area of low pressure that’s very disorganized” and said there’s a 40% chance of development over the next seven days.
“It could go anywhere in the Gulf, but if it impacted the same area, it would be even more devastating,” Delerme said, referring to Hurricane Helene’s catastrophic damage to Florida and the Tampa Bay area.
The next named storm will be Leslie, as Kirk was just assigned to a tropical system in the eastern Atlantic, a storm that doesn’t pose a current threat to the U.S.
