Multiple storm-related fatalities have been confirmed in Buncombe County, according to Sheriff Miller.

During a press conference on Sunday, Sept. 28 Miller shared that the death toll has climbed to 30 people throughout the county following the impacts from Helene. The sheriff says families of those killed are being notified and he offered his condolences.

Miller also stated that search and rescue efforts are continuing, however the death toll may continue to rise.

"We know that that may include recovery operations," Miller said.

Residents should avoid traveling to keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles and work crews in the area. The State of Emergency was extended and remains in place for Buncombe County, per officials.

County Manager Avril Pinder shared they are partnering with Verizon to deliver a temporary cellular satellite trailer to the Family Justice Center located at 35 Woodfin Street. She says this tower will offer an opportunity for limited cellular reception within several city blocks of where it is parked.

"The tower will be operational late Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29," per Pinder.

In the press conference, Pinder said they are working to get essential supplies to those in need. Staff have reached out and requested support by state officials and they are continuing to work with organizations in the area.

Previously, supplies that were in the process of being sent to the area of Buncombe County and Asheville were delayed as a result of mudslides blocking I-40 and other highways.

City Manager, Josh Harold of Black Mountain confirmed they have received potable water but are still waiting for food to arrive and additional resources. The water is being distributed at Engles located on Highway 9. Active rescue missions are still underway, and roads are beginning to be cleared by first responders.

According to county officials, more than 600 people have not yet been accounted for.

In response to a question asked about restrooms and shower facilities being made available to residents, officials say they will look into that possibility.

For those dependent on medical equipment that requires power should visit the emergency medical shelter located 10 Genevieve Circle in Asheville.

The AB Tech Conference Center located at 16 Fernihurst Drive in Asheville is open to the public. To access this shelter use Victoria Road Entrance. The shelter at WNC Agriculture Center on Fanning Bridge Road is now full.

Earlier today, Governor Cooper announced the NC National Guard were airlifting supplies to counties across the region. The death toll at the time was 11 but was believed to rise as emergency personnel continued search and recovered efforts in isolated areas.

Officials say a new update will be released on Monday, Sept. 30 at 10:00 a.m.
