ASHEVILLE - As most of the city of Asheville remains without power, a curfew has been announced for the city of Asheville from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. beginning the night of Sept. 27 and through 7:30 a.m. Sept. 29, Asheville Police Department Chief Mike Lamb said during a joint conference with Buncombe County.
"So that's going to be from nightfall all the way until dawn," Lamb said.
There have been over 60 water rescues as a result of flooding from Tropical Storm Helene, Buncombe County Assistant Emergency Services Director Ryan Cole said. Nearly 200 firefighters are actively responding to calls across the city, Assistant city of Asheville Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Knighton said during the conference.
As lights are out across the city, the curfew is to make sure that residents do not wander into rising waters as street lights are broken, Lamb said. Additionally, Lamb noted that due to the number of traffic signals down, intersections are dangerous for travelers and would be difficult to navigate at night.
"When it is dark, a lot of times you cannot see water on the roadway, and we've had to do several water rescues from vehicles today, where officers and first responders have to put themselves at risk to try to save folks that are driving into the water," Lamb continued.
"Turn around, don't drown," he said of motorists driving into flood waters.
