Today’s daily digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: Helene helps deliver increased breezes and high humidity, but it’s not hot. Plus, the showers and eventual thunderstorms bring welcome rain.

Express forecast

Today: Showers then some storms. Breezy. Highs: Around 75.

Tonight: Storms and downpours possible. Lows: Around 70.

Tomorrow: Morning shower? Sunnier. Highs: Near 80 to mid-80s.

Sunday: Fairly cloudy, showers. Highs: Mid-70s to around 80.

Forecast in detail

We’ve got unsettled weather ahead thanks to moisture from Helene in the form of breezes, showers and storms. While not a major concern for the immediate area, a few strong storms are possible today, mainly south of town. Tomorrow could bring reprieve from high rain chances and completely overcast skies. Sunday through Tuesday turns grayer again, as rain chances return.

Today (Friday): Showers and a few periods of light-to-moderate rain are likely, most anytime of the day. The main rain chance with downpours and thunderstorms should wait until after 4 p.m. or so. Overcast skies dominate, along with humidity. Breezes from the east-southeast become noticeable by midday, perhaps gusting near 25 mph during the late afternoon.

Temperatures generally hover within a few degrees of 75. If strong to severe storms develop — even with a quick tornado or two — they should mainly stay south of the Beltway. We’ll keep you updated. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Showers, storms and some downpours are risk through at least midnight, if not into the early morning hours. Gusty breezes from the east and southeast should diminish along the same timeline as rain intensity. High, humid dew points around 70 degrees keep low temperatures around that same level. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Saturday): Drier, sunnier periods are possible with only about a 30 percent chance of showers, especially in the morning. Cloud levels could vary and aren’t high confidence, but I think we do have a chance to enjoy a break from the overcast. Sun may boost high temperatures near 80 to the mid-80s. Humidity could decline a bit. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: A few showers, and even storm chances, return around sunset and may stick with us most of the night. Rain amounts don’t look too heavy, so you may be able to dodge many raindrops if you watch the radar closely. Temperatures bottom out in the mid- to upper 60s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: Another low-pressure system heads our way with some rain chances, mainly showers. Clouds could thin a bit during the midday and afternoon hours, but that could lead to a late day thunderstorm or two as well. Temperatures are aiming for the mid-70s to around 80 degrees, but the top-end warmth may only come if clouds and rain chances subside further. Confidence: Low-Medium

A look ahead

Sunday night: Mostly cloudy with showers. In the predawn hours, we could see some downpours and hear some rumbles of thunder, too. Temperatures may hover in the humid mid-60s along with periodic fog and drizzle. Confidence: Low-Medium

Clouds and rain chances reassert themselves further on Monday and Tuesday, with higher rain amounts possible, too. Umbrellas are advised. Rain and overcast skies may hold temperatures back in the upper 60s to low 70s — subject to slight change. Tuesday may lean drier than Monday with a slight bit more sunshine, but I wouldn’t count on that just yet. Confidence: Low-Medium
